The first remains of the population date back to the Visigoth period. It wasn't until the Muslim domination in the 9th century when the first stable settlement of Arabic origin was formed on the headland which today is occupied by the Palacio Real ‘ Royal Palace ', under the domination of the Emir of Cordoba Muhammad I. Later by the reconquest of King Alfonso VI of the Kingdom of León and Castilla in the year 1085 and the flourishing cultural town planning of the Austrias. Madrid has been witness and the setting for the greatest events in Iberian, European and Universal History. With the dynastic change and the instauration of the Borbon monarchy, Madrid developed into the great city it is today, capital and neuralgic centre of the Kingdom of Spain . In the 20 th century, Madrid developed into a cosmopolitan city, happy and kind, with more than three million inhabitants. It invites the visitor to submerge themselves in its streets and enjoy, in depth, its great buildings, parks: like the Casa del Campo, the Retiro, International Fairs, Gastronomy, Culture... Its traditional festivities are San Isidro ‘Saint Isidro', celebrated on May 15 th , the Virgen de la Almudena ‘Virgen of Almudena', on November 9th, and May 2nd, and festivity throughout the Community of Madrid.
The surrounding areas of Madrid are full of museum palaces, such as the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, spring residence of King Felipe II from the mid 16th century (the great composer Joaquín Rodrigo dedicated it his great Aranjuez concert at the beginning of 1939. Maestro Rodrigo and his wife Victoria, are buried in the Aranjuez cemetery). The Royal Palace Granja de San Ildefonso from the beginning of the 1700s, is famous for its tapestries, lamps and paintings of great artistic value, and above all the monastery Real Monasterio del Escorial of Herrerian style from the mid 16th century under the reign of Felipe II (old residence of the Kings of Spain and Royal Pantheon) an obligatory visit due to its great works of art, tapestries, rooms, library, the whole complex is a work of art.... Cities such as Toledo , cradle of the three cultures; Christian, Muslim and Jewish. Segovia , Salamanca … we can't forget to visit them as well. History, culture, gastronomy, fun, all in one.
Madrid 's climate is continental Mediterranean . Warm and dry in the summer and cold in the winter, with an agreeable spring and autumn. In winter temperatures oscillate between 4-5ºC with occasional snow and in summer between the 24ºC of July and the 35º C of August. The city is 655m above sea level. The Guadarrama mountains is the most autochthonous escape to the Madrid community's nature. The highest peak has an elevation of 2.428m, Peñalara, situated between Madrid and Segovia . Another tourist escape, are the villages, full of medieval charm and charged with history: Chinchón, San Lorenzo del Escorial, Alcalá de Henares , Talamanca de Jarama, Buitrago de Lozaya...
